Based on the assumption you are FTP'ing with WS_FTP (as recommended above) the following section will give you a basic run-down on how to configure and use WS_FTP for transferring files.
You will start configuring WS_FTP in the following areas:
- Click the "OK" button and WS_FTP should start logging you into your FTP site. If there are any login error messages in the message box in the lower part of the WS_FTP screen, please check your host, Login, and Password (the password is CASE sensitive, meaning 'YOURPASSWORD' is different from 'yourpassword', I suggest that you cut-n-paste your password DIRECTLY from the initial e-mail I sent you. into the WS_FTP password area).
- Once you have correctly ftp'd to your server. You will see "index.html" in the right-hand window.
WS_FTP has two main windows - a listing of files and folders on the left ( your computer ) and another listing of files and folders on the right ( your space at greenspider.com ) To upload the web page you just worked on you will have to navigate through the folders and files in the left window until you see the filename of the web page. Once you have the file selected ( highlighted ) click on the > button on the middle part of WS_FTP , a transfer dialog box should appear showing the progress of uploading the file. Now click on the disconnect button on WS_FTP and then after a few seconds hit exit.
Now to view the web page on the Internet launch your web browser and go to www.balfe.com and click on the link to your website. Remember you might have to press reload or refresh on the web browser once you get to the page that you changed and uploaded to see the changes.
Any subdirectories you would like to create may be created at the site.
Basic editing and changes to your web page can be made using Notepad since a html file ( web page ) is a text file. Notepad comes with Windows 95/98
But programs like Arachnophilia have many tools and features that make editing the content of your web pages far easier and give better results.
Once you're satisfied with the changes in your web page be sure to save it without changing the filename. Now it's time to connect to the Internet with a FTP program.
The FTP program allows you to upload and download files from your directory at www.balfe.com whenever you want. Once the FTP program starts to load a dialog box should come up - just click on OK and the system should dial up your Internet Provider. You will know when you're on the Internet when you get a message saying "Connected to..."
